Three-Phase Motor Overload Protection
When a motor is overloaded for an extended period, and the temperature rise of the motor winding exceeds its allowable limit, the insulating material can become brittle, reducing its service life and potentially causing severe damage. The larger the overload current, the faster the motor reaches its maximum allowable temperature rise. Commonly used overload protection components, such as thermal relays, are designed to address this issue. A thermal relay operates as follows: when the motor runs at its rated current and the winding temperature increases to the rated value, the relay remains inactive; however, if the motor experiences an overload, the relay will act based on the magnitude of the current—slower for smaller overloads and quicker for larger ones.
Considerations for Thermal Relay and Short-Circuit Protection
Due to thermal inertia, a thermal relay does not respond instantaneously to short-duration overloads or short-circuit currents. As such, it’s essential to supplement the thermal relay with short-circuit protection. For this, a fuse should be selected with a melting rating that does not exceed four times the rated current of the thermal relay’s heating element.
Environmental temperature differences between the motor and the thermal relay can affect the reliability of the protection system. Some thermal relays use thermistors embedded within the motor winding to provide more accurate temperature measurements of the winding. Overcurrent protection is commonly used for DC motors or wound-rotor asynchronous motors. However, for three-phase squirrel-cage motors, short-circuit protection is typically unnecessary, as short-term overcurrent does not lead to significant damage.
